Why we pick a presidential candidate


Election endorsements from newspaper editorial boards have long been magnets for criticism. 

Thus, a few words are in order about why we’re endorsing in this year’s presidential and Iowa congressional races.

The Register typically publishes two or more editorials each week. These unsigned opinions represent the consensus of our five-person editorial board. The idea is that putting forth a collective opinion on issues that are important to Iowans is valuable for focusing attention on those concerns and provoking conversation. And the question of who represents the state in the White House and Congress is an issue important to Iowans.
