Welcome back, Playbookers! Covid put a crimp on the holidays, but it’s not slowing the political scene. Action in Springfield starts this week, and before you know it, we’ll be talking polls, debates, and cash as the June 28 primary approaches.
The big campaign news came on New Year’s Day, courtesy of former President Donald Trump. He’s endorsing freshman Rep. Mary Miller, who announced she’ll challenge Rep. Rodney Davis in the newly drawn 15th Congressional District, setting the stage for a second member-vs.-member contest in the state’s June 28 primary.
Democrats are already gearing up for a battle between Reps. Sean Casten and Marie Newman in the 5th District.
The big question among political observers: Can Miller’s Trump endorsement, which she secured after visiting the former president at Mar-a-Lago last month, beat out Davis’ fundraising acumen?
