Special election scheduled for 80th Assembly

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a special election for the 80th Assembly District and two other state offices, days after Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez resigned her seat for the San Diego Assembly District.

A special election for the 80th Assembly District will be held June 7, Newsom announced, along with special elections for the 11th Assembly District and 22nd Congressional District. Those will take place on the same day as primaries for the 2022 midterm election, which will be held in November for Congressional seats and most state offices.

A separate primary for the three special elections will be held on April 5, according to the governor’s office.

On Monday Gonzalez announced that she would step down from the Legislature for a new position as chief executive of the California Labor Federation. Her resignation took effect Wednesday and she will start her new job in July.
