Roger Marshall, Laura Kelly stumble while wading into former Kansas governors’ loyalties


TOPEKA — U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall punctuated a speech during a Republican Party campaign rally by introducing Jeff Colyer as one of two former Kansas GOP governors endorsing Derek Schmidt’s quest to oust Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

“Our next speaker is one of two living governors that supports Derek Schmidt,” Marshall declared during a bus tour stop in Parsons. “I guess our current governor thinks there’s only one. We have two living governors that are supporting Derek as well.”

For the record, Colyer is the lone former Kansas Republican governor to officially endorse Schmidt’s candidacy for governor. Two other former Kansas GOP governors, Mike Hayden and Bill Graves, threw their influence behind the reelection of Kelly. Former GOP Gov. Sam Brownback — officially — remains on the fence.
