Rep. Elise Stefanik’s Dem rival mocked for ‘New Yorkians’ gaffe


An upstate attorney looking to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik in Congress may have already jumped the shark.

Matt Putorti, a Democratic lawyer from Whitehall, came in for mockery online when he blasted his GOP rival for not focusing on the needs of “everyday New Yorkians.”

Empire State residents have been known as “New Yorkers” since at least the mid-1800s and that has long been the preferred demonym of choice for residents, according to a Google N-gram analysis. New Yorker is also the official term used by the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.

“My fellow New Yorkians… Said by no one, ever. Until today,” Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro joked on Twitter.
