Ready for Sunday? Trey Lance resurfaces as 49ers sustain QB guessing game


Say this for Trey Lance: The 49ers’ rookie quarterback can take coaching.

That was obvious Friday. Not by the way he threw or ran in practice, but by the way the 21-year-old spoke afterward.

Not long after head coach Kyle Shanahan made a seemingly dubious claim that Jimmy Garoppolo could play Sunday against the Texans despite having a right thumb injury that has prevented him from throwing a football for eight days and counting, Lance met with reporters and didn’t stray from the company line.

“I don’t know if Jimmy is going to be able to (play) or not Sunday,” Lance said at one point, later adding: “Jimmy’s our starting quarterback. So if he can go on Sunday I’m going to continue to do my job and be as prepared as I can in case something happens to him.”
