Canceled — Former President Donald Trump earlier this week decided to scrap the press conference he had planned to give at Mar-a-Lago on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
Batter up — Into the vacuum came Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis on Thursday went to Palm Beach County — approximately 9 miles from Trump’s Florida home — to hold his own press conference.
Counterprogramming — The topic was ostensibly about Covid-19 and testing. But DeSantis was also ready to deliver his hot take that the commemoration of the attack — a moment when American democracy was under assault — was really about Democrats and the media wanting another reason to “smear” supporters of the former president.
