Cruz misreads history when he calls himself a presidential front-runner

For someone who lies with considerable frequency, our state’s junior U.S. senator is remarkably bad at it.

For example, when Ted Cruz kissed up to Donald Trump in the early stages of the 2016 GOP presidential race — calling Trump “terrific” and inviting him to a Capitol Hill rally in opposition to a nuclear deal with Iran — it was obvious that Cruz didn’t believe a word he was spewing.

Cruz confirmed as much when he privately told supporters that Trump’s candidacy ultimately would falter, and the bombastic reality star’s supporters would have no choice but to gravitate to Cruz.

Cruz’s obsequious gushing for Trump in 2015 was no more contrived than his theatrical denunciation of Trump in May 2016, when he called his rival a “pathological liar,” “utterly amoral,” a “serial philanderer” and a “narcissist at a level I…
