Confederate ideology is still alive and well, and paraded through our capitol


As the House select committee has reminded us with riveting video footage, the Jan. 6 insurrectionists waved all sorts of flags, banners and signs as they battered police officers to break into the U.S. Capitol. There were U.S. flags, Trump banners, MAGA streamers and flags with Christian iconography. There was the yellow Gadsden flag (”Don’t tread on me”) currently favored by right-wing reactionaries. And there was, of course, the Confederate battle flag. What’s a violent insurrection without the St. Andrew’s cross and stars?

Kevin Seefried — along with his adult son, Hunter — was recently convicted for his role among the rioters. In a widely disseminated photograph, he was featured casually strolling outside the Senate chamber with the battle flag dangling from a pole across his left shoulder.
