President Biden’s speech against political violence struck a raw nerve and drew vicious condemnation from the GOP last week. While two Marines stood at attention behind him, Biden called on the nation to reject political extremism, warning America that democracy was under assault. “We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise,” he said, “too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal.”
Critics rightly note that it is not normal for an American president to use state resources, like Marines, to deliver a partisan speech either.
It’s a conundrum. Either Trump and MAGA Republicans truly embrace an extremism that “threatens the very foundations of our Republic,” as Biden warned, or Marines standing guard during his speech were almost as bad as Trump deploying the National Guard against protestors at Lafayette Square.
