Eastwood vs. fake news and other commentary

Culture beat: Eastwood vs. Fake News

Clint Eastwood’s new film, “Richard Jewell,” tells the true story of “how the FBI and media aligned to punish a security guard who saved lives at the 1996 Summer Olympics” — and issues a stark “indictment of 21st-century fake news,” argues Christian Toto at Hollywood in Toto. By depicting the shocking media smears of Jewell, the movie sharply criticizes press elites two decades before they started disgracing themselves “on a weekly basis.” That shows “flickers of Red State awareness” in the script, despite Hollywood’s liberalism — a hopeful spark for conservatives who have “spent the last three years fighting against a culture calling them racist, sexist, homophobic and more.” Only Eastwood, a conservative rebel, could fight back against that culture “in Oscar-worthy fashion.”
