Salem voters throughout the city will be asked to vote twice in this year’s municipal elections.
Contested races for councilor-at-large, Ward 3 and Ward 6 on the City Council and for School Committee are prompting the need for preliminary elections in Salem on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Final elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5.
While 10 at-large candidates were certified to run before the 5 p.m. deadline lapsed in Salem Tuesday night, retired Salem police Capt. Conrad Prosniewski returned 178 signatures but was still having names certified when deadline passed. It remains unclear going into Wednesday if he had the 100 verified signatures an at-large councilor needs. The preliminary election will thin the herd to eight candidates.
