Mike Pompeo conducted his own personal review of the CIA findings that Russia wanted to boost Donald Trump in 2016 and found no wrongdoing by the agency, Politico is reporting.
The review came just after Pompeo took over as CIA director in 2017. Politico attributed its information to three people familiar with the matter.
Attorney General Bill Barr has ordered a probe into whether the CIA was correct in its finding that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to boost Trump during the presidential election.
But Politico noted the issue already was reviewed by Pompeo, who is now secretary of state. It said Pompeo had grilled CIA analysts over their findings.
“This wasn’t just a briefing,” said one person. “This was a challenging back and forth, in which Pompeo asked the officers tough questions about their work and how they determined Putin’s specific objectives.”
